Bruce Bochy

Bruce Bochy

Bruce Bochy had a relatively undistinguished Major League playing career with the Houston Astros, New York Mets and San Diego Padres. He is best remembered for his hat size — at least in New York.

After his playing days ended, Bochy moved through the ranks as a minor league manager and big league coach. In 1995, he took over as manager of the San Diego Padres. The next year, he won the National League Manager of the Year trophy. Two years later, the Padres set a team record by winning 98 games en route to the National League pennant.

In 2007, Bochy moved on to manage the San Francisco Giants – a position he still holds.

I sent the 1986 Donruss card shown on the right to Bochy just after Opening Day this year. He must be catching up on fan mail now that the season is over, because I got it back today.

About Paul

I'm a child of the 1980s who never completely grew up and is still trying to figure things out. I root for the New York Mets, even though that doesn't always reflect well on my judgement, and I've been writing about them and other baseball-related subjects at since 2007. I write about other things at Contact me at
