Welcome to February… only 19 days until spring training

We made it through January, and in 19 more days New York Mets pitchers and catchers will report to spring training, unofficially marking the end of winter.

Today is the day 2012 Topps baseball cards officially come out, even though they’ve already made their appearance at some retailers and on eBay. Keith Olbermann shared some photos and details from an event held at Topps HQ to officially mark the debut on his blog yesterday.

According to a story in yesterday’s New York Post, Daniel Murphy is already making plans to work with coach Tim Teufel on his defensive skills at second base. I’m really hoping that Murph can play well enough there to avoid injury, because designated hitter is not a position in the National League and first base is already locked up.

And the Houston Astros have signed the ageless Livan Hernandez to a minor league contract. I wonder who will have more wins this year – Livan or Jamie Moyer?
