I watched the MLB Network broadcast of an exhibition game between my two least favorite baseball teams, and I kept score.
I was hoping that the Yankees and Phillies would have to settle for a tie — for a little while, I thought it might work out that way. But the Yankees minor leaguers were better than the Phillies minor leaguers, at least today – New York claimed an 8-5 victory to open their Grapefruit League season.
If I counted correctly, 48 players got into the game. On the bright side, neither team batted around and no lineup spot had more than three players in it.
Former Mets in the game included Philadelphia Phillies Ty Wigginton and Raul Valdes, and New York Yankee Mike O’Connor. And it was neat to see recent Trenton Thunder alumni Manny Banuelos, Dellin Betances, Corban Joseph and Jorge Vazquez on television.
But I’m ready to see some Mets games… hopefully they’ll have a few players that haven’t succumbed to some sort of injury to play on Monday night.

Paul,
Its a workout keeping score to a spring training game, especially during the first week!. I was at the Georgetown U vs Washington Nationals game on Friday and Georgetown used 9 pitchers!
I went over to Astro stadium (Kissimmee) yesterday and watch the Nationals vs Astros. I kept score there and they used 48 players there!
I will be headiing down to PSL on Monday for the Mets opening night game. I am using a softball score book, just for the fact that it has 10 batting positions, leaving plenty of room for roster and pitching changes!
LETS GO METS!
I’ve never been a fan of the DH rule, but I have to admit that it helps when teams use it during the early part of spring training. Nine pitchers, plus pinch hitters and double switches would make a real mess of a scorecard.
Actually I think your count was 51 players. So much for “You can’t tell the players without a scorecard”…..Its not easy!
