Yesterday, Adam Rubin of ESPN New York reported that the Mets are expected to sign Jonathon Niese to a long-term contract.
“The eventual deal is believed to be comparable to the five-year, $28.5 million deal that included two team options — for $11 million and $11.5 million — that fellow left-hander Derek Holland signed with the Texas Rangers last month,” Rubin wrote.
This news follows a report from Mike Puma of the New York Post last week that Mets officials have considered picking up R.A. Dickey‘s option for 2013 and extending his contract.
It’s nice to be talking about the Mets keeping some of their players, instead of counting down the days until their departure.

Not a bad deal. Niese is not a top-of-the-rotation ace, but he certainly does have value as a potential #2 or #3 starter. Holland has more potential for dominance, but still, I don’t have a problem with this deal for the Mets. If one or two of their minor league pitching prospects pans out in the next year or two, they could have a nice little rotation by 2014.
Incidentally, the 2012 Topps baseball cards are about as bland as they come. Not much thought went into the design for this series.
Cheers to a fellow Mets fan!

It’s just nice to hear talk about the Mets keeping some of their players. I don’t expect Niese to be a star, but any decent young pitcher is worth locking up.
I’m not a fan of the 2012 Topps design either, but it’s too unmemorable to hate. I do like some of the cards that feature interesting photos, but Jonathon Niese didn’t get one of those…
