Baseball America’s organizational top prospects lists & the Trenton Thunder

Last week, Baseball America started publishing its annual organizational top prospect rankings. The magazine began with the American League East. (We’ve got a month to wait before they get to the National League)

Looking at the Yankees’ list, I see two players that spent time with the Trenton Thunder in 2012 made the list: outfielder Tyler Austin (#4) and pitcher Brett Marshall (#6). Neither made the list last off-season.

Four of the players on this year’s list could spend time with the Thunder in 2013. Austin is likely to open the season with the Double-A team, while catcher Gary Sanchez (#3) and outfielders Slade Heathcott (#2) and Mason Williams (#1) could be promoted later in the season if they play well for the Single -A Tampa Yankees. (Depending on how aggressive the Yankees are, one or more could even make the Trenton opening day roster, I suppose.)

Austin was also honored with the Breakout Prospect of the Year title in the 2012 Minor League Baseball Year End Awards earlier this month.

While this year’s Thunder team was fun to watch for people who wanted to root for them, next year might be a more exciting year for fans who want to see prospects.
