Braves sign Alex Torres to minor league deal

Happy New Year! I hope that 2016 will be everything that you want it to be.

Former Mets LHP Alex Torres found a new home in the Atlanta Braves organization earlier this week.

Acquired near the end of spring training in 2015 from the San Diego Padres, Torres was largely ineffective during his Mets’ tenure. In 34.1 innings out of New York’s bullpen, Torres walked 26 and allowed 26 hits, including six home runs.

But the 28-year-old Torres does still have potential – he struck out better than a batter per inning with the Mets and has 157 over 154.1 innings for his four-year major league career.

A team smart enough not to shoehorn Torres into a lefty specialist role might find a valuable bullpen asset. Torres recorded 84 of his strikeouts against right-handed batters and has held righties to a .224 batting average on balls put in play, compared to the .311 BAbip that lefties have against him.

The best Torres can hope for from Mets fans is that they remember him as “the hat guy” instead of thinking of him in less flattering terms because he often wasn’t able to get the outs Terry Collins asked him to.
